McSavage madness for the Laughing Loft July 23rd
Dave McSavage on Friday July 23rd. Doors are 8.45 Pm with show starting at 9.20 PM. Tickets are €15/12 euro and can be
booked by calling the Bottom Dog Theatre Company on 085 2085737. MC for the evening is John Caplis with support from
Dublin's Simon O'Keffe, host of the Capital Comedy Club in Dublin.
David McSavage is one of Ireland's most controversial and boundary pushing
comedians. He has been arrested several times over the years and has
triggered complaints after several of his numerous Late Late Show
appearances. Surprisingly enough, the Late Late Show has been one of his
greatest patrons; he has appeared on the show "six or seven times", by his
own reckoning.
He also used to warm up the crowd before the show, which is a strange to
think of, considering McSavage's brand of abusive social commentary. When
McSavage has appeared on the Late Late Show, he spent much of the time
lampooning Pat Kenny mercilessly. His impression of Kenny is spot on and
cuts right to the presenter's greatest weaknesses. For this Kenny kept bringing
him back on the Late Late Show. Is Dave McSavage Pat Kenny's favourite
comedian? "I don't know about that, I used to do the warm ups for the Late
Late Show and he's always been good to me. He is a very decent soul, even
with all his foibles and follies," McSavage remarks.
"I think insulting people is a very Irish way of showing affection," he says.
"Now I know that Pat Kenny likes me because I was walking down the street the other day and he was in a car with his
producer, and they rolled down the window and screamed 'You w***er McSavage' at me!" he adds. Even if this story is
apocryphal, it remains a brilliant image. The sight of Pat Kenny screaming obscenities at McSavage as he speeds by in a car,
like a teenage boy, is not an image I will forget anytime soon.
McSavage is well known for his anarchic street performances, which can take place anywhere, but happen most often in
Dublin's Temple bar area. The shows can take any form and tend to freewheel wildly depending on what catches McSavage's
attention. Foreign tourists find themselves being commented on, or songs composed about having sex with pigeons. He has
performed on the street due to a mixture of choice and necessity. He thinks, "Performing indoor gigs is more artistically
challenging, as you can use the same lines again and again when doing outside gigs".
Dave McSavage’s new show entitled 'The Savage Eye' is starting its second season on RTÈ this November. The first series
was shown earlier this year and explored why we in Ireland drink so much and paid so much for property during the Celtic
Tiger. The show also looked at other taboo subjects such as sex and the Catholic Church. RTÉ decided to commission
another five episodes, although McSavage says, "they were all made for nothing, but people will work for very little if they think
it might be worthwhile".
Describing the show McSavage says he was happy with the response he got from the first series and says the new series
will take the same format, which is “basically a series of sketches done in documentary form", he explains. It will continue to
cover all the big contemporary topics like sex, religion, property, the arts and happiness. "The format, basically, is vox pops of
what people think, and then sketches reacting to what people say," he explains.
As an alcoholic, McSavage feels that you can make serious points while making a comedy series. McSavage discloses that
he intends to stop performing on the street now. "I've done it so much that people say 'there's that p***k again' and busking on
the street makes you very lazy, you can keep doing the same lines". "It allowed me to tell people to f**k off and to be my own
worst enemy. I was obnoxious, so people would reject me and then I would be more obnoxious to them as a result."
"I'm my own worst enemy and always sabotaged my own chances of success. The street performing gave me a safety net
because I could always afford to be an ass***e as I could still earn a living."
I asked him if he was ever aware that he was sabotaging himself? In reply, he says, "to be successfully unsuccessfully, you
have to be unaware that you are doing it to yourself." This unfortunate habit led to McSavage alienating himself from some of
the already small Irish comedy scene. Now, at 43, he sounds wiser, older and more mature.
Ryan Tubridy, a first cousin of David's, is the new host of the Late Late Show. Ironically, given his long history with the show,
he has not been on the revamped edition yet. He says, "I might need to go on to talk up the new show, but there might be a
conflict of interest". On Tubridy, he says his cousin is "very good at what he does and a world class broadcaster. He is a very
funny guy and does a great impression of Robert de Niro which makes me laugh".
Clearly, McSavage wants to get some dinner when he goes over to the cousin's house at Christmas. He says that while he
enjoyed mocking Tubridy's predecessor, he doesn't really have an angle on Ryan. More's the pity but since they're friendly,
shouldn't McSavage be able to lampoon Tubridy too? In any case, look out for the second season of the Savage Eye on RTE 2
this November.
